It was formed in 2008 in response to a widespread view in government and business that Australia needed a non-partisan think tank providing independent, rigorous and practical solutions to some of the country\u2019s most pressing problems.<\/p>\n<p>These three words are vital to Grattan\u2019s mission:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 independent, taking the perspective of the Australian public interest rather than any interest group. They avoid commissioned work to ensure this independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 rigorous in obtaining the best available evidence from their own data analysis and from published work.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 practical in articulating what governments should do to improve the lives of all Australians.<\/p>\n<p>Grattan runs six policy programs: Cities, Energy, Health, Higher Education, School Education, and Productivity Growth, chosen as they believe these areas are vital to shaping Australia\u2019s direction as a liberal democracy in a global economy.<\/p>\n<p>Fact-based analysis and lively debate can change the minds of policy makers and the public, and where key issues are not being resolved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaker:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Daley, Chief Executive Officer, Grattan Institute<\/p>\n<p>John is one of Australia\u2019s leading public policy thinkers, with 20 years experience in the public, private and university sectors.
