The RCH is Australia’s first hospital to be accredited by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) as Stage 7 for its Outpatient Electronic Medical Recorded Adoption Model (O-EMRAM).

John Daniels, Global Vice President of HIMSS Analytics, said this was an historic moment for the Australian health landscape and was especially significant given the RCH had only just celebrated two years since EMR implementation when it was awarded the highest level of international best practice in digital healthcare.

“Around the world, adopting electronic medical records has been shown to help healthcare organisations to save lives by using data and analytics to improve high-quality care, safety, and efficiency,” Mr Daniels said at the time of the announcement.

“Stage 7 is really the tipping point that allows hospitals and patients to see the true benefits of EMRs.

“The real goal across Australia is for all organisations to reach this stage and achieve better health through information and technology.”

During a visit to the RCH, assessors made particular comment about the way the RCH had leveraged its electronic medical records, data and the patient portal to deliver new levels of care to complex patients.

Following the success of the HIMSS accreditation, the RCH was also honoured at the HIMSS AsiaPac18 Conference and Exhibition.

The RCH won the Asia Pacific HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Healthcare Award 2018 in the Outstanding ICT Achievement Category for the ViCTOR EMR Project that replicates the paper observation charts in our EMR to enhance patient outcomes and safety.

CEO John Stanway said the Stage 7 rating and HIMSS-Elsevier Digital Healthcare Award were the result of the hard work, ongoing commitment and innovation from many staff.

“Implementing our EMR has been an exciting and challenging journey that has transformed the way we work together and deliver care to patients and families, so I’m very proud we have achieved this significant level of recognition less than three years after our system went live,” John said.

“We are committed to building a digital hospital, and these achievements really reflect the work we are doing in the space, and our ability to lead the way in many areas of paediatric healthcare.”

The RCH is also one of only three hospitals in Australia to hold a HIMSS level 6 rating for our inpatient EMR use and is aiming to seek Stage 7 inpatient accreditation within the coming 18 months.
