During the procedure, explain what is occurring and signpost any changes before they occur, especially sensory aspects such as smells, feelings, etc. (eg a change in position, technique, equipment or staff)<\/li>\n<li>Use clear and simple language that is tailored to the child\u2019s developmental level. Use affirmative terms (eg \u201cKeep your arm nice and relaxed\u201d) and avoid negative terms (eg \u201cDon\u2019t move\u201d, \u201cSting\u201d) and qualifiers (eg \u201cThis will hurt a little\u201d).
