The CPG covers nasogastric fluid therapy for rehydration, maintenance fluids and restricted fluids in unwell children.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt\">The Key points for the CPG are<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-329 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/clinicalguide\/files\/2021\/03\/NG-fluids.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/clinicalguide\/files\/2021\/03\/NG-fluids.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/clinicalguide\/files\/2021\/03\/NG-fluids-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Whenever possible the enteral route (oral or nasogastric) should be used for fluids<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shocked children<\/strong> require Intravenous (IV) resuscitation \u2013 see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/clinicalguide\/guideline_index\/Resuscitation__Care_of_the_seriously_unwell_child\/\">Resuscitation: care of the seriously unwell child<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Serial weights are the best measure of acute changes in fluid status<\/li>\n<li>Rehydration treats dehydration, not the underlying cause. Careful and regular clinical review is required<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The CPG forms part of suite of hydration CPGs covering IV fluids, dehydration, vomiting and gastroenteritis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nasogastric fluids is a new CPG and was endorsed by PIC on 18 February 2021.
