{"id":4988,"date":"2023-05-23T14:57:49","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T04:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/?p=4988"},"modified":"2023-05-23T14:57:49","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T04:57:49","slug":"support-for-parents-with-intellectual-disability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/2023\/05\/23\/support-for-parents-with-intellectual-disability\/","title":{"rendered":"Support for parents with intellectual disability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Raising Children Network resources aim to empower parents with intellectual disability.<\/p>\n<p>Video stories, Easy English guides and evidence-based articles are part of a new suite of resources developed as tools to help professionals and practitioners build capacity in the parents they support.<\/p>\n<p>The resources, aimed at empowering parents to access services that can support them, include a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/for-professionals\/easy-english-guides\">10 Easy English guides<\/a>, which are downloadable booklets. \u00a0The booklets, written in accessible language and using picture communication symbols, cover topics including <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/grown-ups\/family-diversity\/parents-like-me\/help-for-parents-with-disability-in-easy-english\">where parents and carers with disability can get help<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/disability\/ndis\/about-ndis\/ndis-in-easy-english\">how to get an NDIS plan for your child<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/disability\/ndis\">three video interviews<\/a> with parents with disability who talk about their experiences using the NDIS and the supports they have accessed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Hackworth said that the videos and Easy English guides enabled parents with different learning styles and literacy levels to gain a better understanding of the supports available to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile these resources have been developed with the aim of increasing the knowledge and skills of parents with diverse abilities to use the NDIS, they could also benefit parents with limited English skills,\u201d Dr Hackworth said.<\/p>\n<p>Raising Children Network developed the resources in partnership with parents and disability professionals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scopeaust.org.au\/\">Scope<\/a> to ensure they are useful and relevant to Australian families.<\/p>\n<p>The resources are part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/disability\/ndis\">suite of 50 evidence-based and inclusive articles and videos<\/a> aimed at giving parents and carers easy access to trusted, quality information about how to access the NDIS scheme to assist children in their care.<\/p>\n<p>Resource links:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/grown-ups\/family-diversity\/parents-like-me\/parenting-with-intellectual-disability\">Article: Parenting with an intellectual disability<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/for-professionals\/easy-english-guides\">Downloadable: Easy English guides<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/disability\/ndis\">Videos: Parents\u2019 stories<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/disability\/ndis\">Full suite of NDIS resources<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Raising Children Network resources aim to empower parents with intellectual disability.
