{"id":4714,"date":"2022-07-28T11:15:31","date_gmt":"2022-07-28T01:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/?p=4714"},"modified":"2022-07-28T12:05:53","modified_gmt":"2022-07-28T02:05:53","slug":"why-language-matters-for-child-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/2022\/07\/28\/why-language-matters-for-child-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Why language matters for child mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a follow-up <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightplus.mja.com.au\/2022\/20\/building-a-shared-language-for-child-mental-health-3-years-on\/\"><strong>MJA Insight article<\/strong><\/a><strong>, MHiPS Director Prof Frank Oberklaid and Senior Program Manager Dr Simone Darling propose a new shared language for child mental health to help address the stigma experienced by families seeking help. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/insightplus.mja.com.au\/2022\/20\/building-a-shared-language-for-child-mental-health-3-years-on\/\">multiple reports<\/a> highlighted a need for doing things differently in child mental health to address the \u2018fragmented and seriously overloaded\u2019 health care services and to overcome the barriers to quality and timely care. In response, Prof Frank Oberklaid and Dr Simone Darling wrote a Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) Insight article calling for a shared language in children\u2019s mental health. Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/insightplus.mja.com.au\/2019\/36\/child-mental-health-building-a-shared-language\/\">why terminology matters in children\u2019s mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since this time, the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed new stressors for families and Australian parents have reported that approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/csrm.cass.anu.edu.au\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/2021\/9\/Child_wellbeing_-_August_2021.pdf\">63% of children aged 5-14 have experienced a worsening in mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In their latest follow-up for <a href=\"https:\/\/insightplus.mja.com.au\/2022\/20\/building-a-shared-language-for-child-mental-health-3-years-on\/\">MJA insight<\/a>, Prof Oberklaid and Dr Simone Darling provide context on the challenges of traditional mental health treatment, citing that \u2018the pandemic has further strengthened the argument for conceptualising and fast-tracking new models of care\u2019 in children\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n<p>The authors, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthcommission.gov.au\/projects\/childrens-strategy\">National Children\u2019s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy,<\/a> suggest that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhips.org.au\/resources\/news\/2022\/children-s-wellbeing-continuum\/\">continuum-based model<\/a> would support a broader approach to child mental health.
