{"id":4598,"date":"2022-01-25T17:45:39","date_gmt":"2022-01-25T06:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/?p=4598"},"modified":"2022-03-01T12:58:54","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T01:58:54","slug":"the-indirect-impacts-of-the-covid-19-pandemic-on-children-and-adolescents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/2022\/01\/25\/the-indirect-impacts-of-the-covid-19-pandemic-on-children-and-adolescents\/","title":{"rendered":"The indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and adolescents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A CCCH-led review explores the evidence of the potential indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children and proposes five strategy areas to help mitigate these impacts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research, published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mja.com.au\/journal\/2022\/216\/6\/potential-indirect-impacts-covid-19-pandemic-children-narrative-review-using?utm_source=carousel&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=homepage\">Medical Journal of Australia<\/a>, used a community child health lens to review findings from previous pandemics, epidemics and natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>The review found clear evidence of adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on children were either repeated or extended from previous large-scale outbreaks of infectious disease and were exacerbated by a lack of health services to meet demand and family pressures.<\/p>\n<p>Centre Director Professor Sharon Goldfeld\u00a0said children were facing a \u201cgeneration-defining disruption\u201d with public health restrictions\u00a0to mitigate COVID-19 infection\u00a0such as virtual\u00a0learning,\u00a0social distancing,\u00a0increased screen time, reduced access to healthcare,\u00a0no structured sport and less outside play,\u00a0to have both immediate\u00a0and longer-term\u00a0impacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public health measures\u00a0have resulted\u00a0in positive\u00a0benefits for some, while\u00a0others have\u00a0been adversely\u00a0and inequitably\u202fimpacted,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The review proposes five strategy areas to begin to address these inequities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>addressing financial instability through parent financial supplements<\/li>\n<li>expanding the role of schools to address learning gaps and wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>rethinking health care delivery to address reduced access<\/li>\n<li>focusing on prevention and early intervention for mental health<\/li>\n<li>using digital solutions to address inequitable service delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mja.com.au\/journal\/2022\/216\/6\/potential-indirect-impacts-covid-19-pandemic-children-narrative-review-using?utm_source=carousel&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=homepage\">Read the full paper<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcri.edu.au\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/documents\/mcri_4_researchbriefdoc_covid_240122.pdf\">Read the Research Brief<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Listen to Professor Sharon Goldfeld and Anne Hollonds, National Children&#8217;s Commissioner, discuss the study on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/breakfast\/children-facing-a-generation-defining-disruption-covid\/13731702\">ABC RN Breakfast, 28 January 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Watch Professor Sharon Goldfeld discuss the findings on ABC News, 24 January 2022.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pandemic taking a big toll on kids&#039;
