{"id":1851,"date":"2016-02-24T05:15:51","date_gmt":"2016-02-24T05:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/?p=1851"},"modified":"2018-12-18T12:16:26","modified_gmt":"2018-12-18T01:16:26","slug":"podcast-universal-newborn-hearing-screening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/ccch\/2016\/02\/24\/podcast-universal-newborn-hearing-screening\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcast: Universal newborn hearing screening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Melissa Wake, CCCH Associate Director, spoke to the ABC&#8217;s Dr Norman Swan about the success of universal newborn hearing screening.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian Infant Hearing Screening Program (VIHSP) screens the hearing of newborn babies\u00a0in their first weeks of life. <span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\">The program started screening in Victoria in 2005 and now operates in 76 hospitals in Victoria, achieving statewide coverage in 2012. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\"><span class=\"no-space\">In the podcast, Professor Wake explained that while early detection has been a huge step forward for children&#8217;s outcomes, there&#8217;s also an opportunity to do more for children with an identified hearing loss.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now it&#8217;s very clear from following up children born in the era of universal newborn hearing screening that there is more to be done.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s made a substantial difference, but still as these children go into schools, still their language and related levels are lower than they should be when we look at their cognitive levels,&#8221;
