Picture: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As students started learning remotely, many people realised how vital our schools are as sites of community connection \u2013 not only for students but for families, carers and members of the broader community as well.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"related inset-right\" role=\"complementary\"><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, schools have always been at the heart of Australian communities. However, many are rarely used outside of hours, on weekends or during school holidays, making them some of Australia\u2019s most underutilised assets.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Schools as community hubs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Across Australia, schools are starting to think more creatively about how they can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreground.com.au\/parks-places\/melbournes-fenceless-vertical-school-trades-hard-borders-for-close-knit-community\/\">share facilities<\/a> with local residents, opening buildings and green spaces to the community as environments where families, young people and the elderly can connect and flourish.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">World Health Organization<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/\">UNESCO<\/a> launched a global initiative for every school to adopt a whole-school approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/pursuit.unimelb.edu.au\/articles\/promoting-health-in-schools-old-idea-new-opportunities\">promoting health and education<\/a>. This is underpinned by eight global standards, including developing school and community partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>Attaining this standard involves schools engaging more with families and local communities, hosting activities that act as \u2018social glue\u2019 and guiding individuals and groups towards realising their highest potential.<\/p>\n<p>The current pandemic has intensified this imperative and cemented the idea that schools are central to community functioning.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"full-width\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/res-2.cloudinary.com\/the-university-of-melbourne\/image\/upload\/s--CbYls1kQ--\/c_limit,f_auto,q_75,w_892\/v1\/pursuit-uploads\/bed\/744\/889\/bed7448891d7b7a84be2ba1554154c701c43c5865444f739b8155f86bfe4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indoor sporting facilities at Officer Secondary College, by Clarke Hopkins Clarke Architects, were developed in partnership between the Victorian Government and Cardinia Shire. Picture: Rhiannon Slatter.<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our research project <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.research.unimelb.edu.au\/learn-network\/projects\/building-connections\">Building Connections: Schools as Community Hubs<\/a> aims to better understand the necessary conditions to successfully develop, implement and sustain schools as community hubs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"related inset-right\" role=\"complementary\">The project will provide evidence-based guidance to help practitioners and policy-makers establish successful \u2018schools as community hubs\u2019 underpinned by innovative partnerships.<\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Examples of innovative community hub schools<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dovetoncollege.vic.edu.au\/\">Doveton College<\/a>, mentioned above, is a renowned example of a community hub school.<\/p>\n<p>Located in Melbourne\u2019s southeast, the college was created by the Victorian State Government in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colemanfoundation.org\/\">The Coleman Foundation<\/a> and opened in 2012 as a Prep to Year 9 school with integrated family and children\u2019s services.<\/p>\n<p>It features child and maternal health services, childcare and early years education, playgroups, visiting medical and allied health services, adult education classes, community sporting facilities, a food technology kitchen, and community facilities for adults to use technology, interact socially and engage with the community team.<\/p>\n<p>Doveton College\u2019s facilities are safely accessed during and outside of school hours, enabled by careful design and operation. Picture: Andrew Wuttke<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Based on the Doveton College experience, the organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/ourplace.org.au\/\">Our Place<\/a> was created to champion and help deliver \u2018school as community hub\u2019 initiatives in 10 additional schools in Victoria, further expanding the opportunities available to children and families in disadvantaged communities.<\/p>\n<p>In Queensland, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au\/chq\/our-services\/community-health-services\/family-community-place\/\">Yarrabilba Family and Community Place<\/a> opened in 2018 on the grounds of Yarrabilba State School. In a new community, the purpose-built community facility has the relaxed atmosphere of a lounge room.<\/p>\n<p>The programs and services offered focus on inclusive and flexible health, education and social services. These are offered in a safe and supportive environment that encourages community connectedness and improves outcomes for children, families and the broader community.<\/p>\n<h3>Strengthening connections<\/h3>\n<p>Secondary schools are also increasingly being thought of as community hubs. In South Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.education.sa.gov.au\/parents-and-families\/enrol-school-or-preschool\/new-schools-and-major-upgrades\/whyalla-secondary-college\">Whyalla Secondary College<\/a> is being built between a regional campus of UniSA and TAFE (Technical and Further Education) facilities.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to strengthen connections between education sectors and create an integrated education hub that will support secondary students\u2019 pathways into higher education and vocational training.<\/p>\n<p>The school will replace three existing high schools and accommodate 1500 students, including those with a disability. Extensive indoor and outdoor sporting facilities and a performing arts centre will be available for community use.<\/p>\n<p>High schools are also being integrated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;sxsrf=ALeKk00Z7jT2FzInVg4xuQr2x0klYNK5Eg:1620290344183&amp;q=sheppardton&amp;spell=1&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiKhJfz07TwAhXUzDgGHbdgBEoQBSgAegQIARAw\">Shepparton<\/a>, Victoria to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gssc.vic.edu.au\/\">Greater Shepparton Secondary College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"full-width\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 501px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/res-5.cloudinary.com\/the-university-of-melbourne\/image\/upload\/s--FLoeKYxy--\/c_limit,f_auto,q_75,w_892\/v1\/pursuit-uploads\/38c\/086\/0b6\/38c0860b60ff84f827f3a6c8b9861a0d2916028f48581a428798144716af.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"387\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Queensland, the Yarrabilba Family and Community Place has a purpose-built community facility with the relaxed atmosphere of a lounge room. Picture: Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Set to open in 2022, this single campus school for 2700 students will feature extensive facilities, many of which will be shared with local groups, including parents and carers, health and wellbeing providers, local businesses, performing arts groups, sporting associations, and other education providers, including the TAFE sector, and higher education.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"related inset-right\" role=\"complementary\">A key objective of the campus\u2019 planning and design is to facilitate partnerships with local organisations and services.<\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Importance of interdisciplinary research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Developing insights into how best to open the school gates to families and the wider public \u2013 both metaphorically and literally \u2013 requires an interdisciplinary approach.<\/p>\n<p>Our team from universities, government and industry bring together expertise from a range of sectors including education, architecture, urban planning, human geography, public health, evaluation and wellbeing science.<\/p>\n<p>By identifying and sharing success stories and pitfalls, the Building Connections project will inform decisions about how to plan, design, govern and manage schools to operate successfully as \u2018more than a school\u2019, encouraging the development of resilient and connected communities<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Later this year, the team will launch the nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.research.unimelb.edu.au\/learn-network\/projects\/building-connections\">Connecting Schools + Communities Survey<\/a> to gather insights from Australian school principals, school facility managers and other school leaders in wellbeing and community development about how and why they share their facilities with the broader community.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"full-width\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/res-2.cloudinary.com\/the-university-of-melbourne\/image\/upload\/s--AQU7Jiy8--\/c_limit,f_auto,q_75,w_892\/v1\/pursuit-uploads\/a9f\/f58\/1f4\/a9ff581f45afe72f7aee259370b2d4d3b9ff6502d75a0b5d8393716d1537.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Korayn Birralee Family Centre in Corio, by Brand Architects, is a collaboration between the City of Greater Geelong, the Victorian Government, Our Place and Northern Bay P-12 College. Picture: Rachel Dere\/Blue Tree Studios.<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first of its kind in Australia, the survey aims to improve guidelines for schools on sharing facilities with the community, inform the design of new schools and school upgrades to afford better learning and community sharing, and help shape education and funding policies for school facilities, school-community initiatives and related staff roles.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At Doveton College, the school leaders are reflecting on how COVID-19 changed the school\u2019s relationship with the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs challenging as the past 18 months have been, in some ways COVID was a gift,\u201d says Principal Debra Gibson \u201cbecause families became more involved with their kids learning.
