The session discussed challenges around the provision of quality adolescent health care including the fragmentation in health services.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #a22986\"><strong>EVENT BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To help enact our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/cah\/about_us\/Vision\/\">vision<\/a>, the CAH run a series of networking events,\u00a0<a title=\"Catalysing Connections for Adolescent Health and Wellbeing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rch.org.au\/cah\/Catalysing_connections\/\"><i>Catalysing Connections for Adolescent Health and Wellbeing<\/i><\/a>\u00a0with interested stakeholders. These<i>\u00a0<\/i>events bring people together from different disciplines and sectors to discuss the interface between research and policy in adolescent health and wellbeing. They tend to have less access to services, face greater barriers in accessing those services, present particular challenges given the lack of skills of healthcare providers and generally benefit less from the health service system.\u00a0 In the first event we discussed problems in the provision of quality adolescent health care including the fragmentation in adolescent health services.<\/p>\n<p>Few places have established comprehensive and integrated models of care. Rather, service systems have mostly focussed on single health issues, with resulting gaps and a failure to take services to scale.\u00a0 However, initiatives, including the National Action plan for Children\u2019s and Young People\u2019s Health and Victoria\u2019s Royal Commission on Mental Health, offer opportunities to influence investment in adolescent health service systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Russell Viner,<\/strong> the current president of the Royal College of paediatrics and Child health, has been involved in planning child and adolescent health services in the UK for over a decade. In this session, Professor Viner outlined the UK&#8217;s plans to adopt a comprehensive and integrated response from birth to 24 years.<\/p>\n<p><em>Watch Professor Viner&#8217;s presentation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/336523480?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Panel Q&amp;A<\/h3>\n<p>A Q&amp;A style panel discussion followed, exploring the Australian context and what the opportunities might be to develop more comprehensive and integrated health care for adolescents: and to what extent might the U.K.\u2019s plans be applicable in this country?<\/p>\n<p>Australia has been particularly prone to adopting strategies for the<em> \u2018issue<\/em> <em>du jour\u2019<\/em> to investment in adolescent health rather than a comprehensive strategy. Sometimes investments are demarcated by age e.g. the early years vs youth; sometimes by topic e.g. mental health or cancer.
