{"id":2392,"date":"2017-06-16T08:08:08","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T22:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/cah\/?p=2392"},"modified":"2019-07-18T16:31:16","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T06:31:16","slug":"adolescent-distress-is-it-more-than-just-a-passing-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/cah\/2017\/06\/16\/adolescent-distress-is-it-more-than-just-a-passing-phase\/","title":{"rendered":"Adolescent distress \u2013 is it more than just a passing phase?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673617313314\">commentary<\/a> piece published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/\">Lancet<\/a> this month, Prof. George Patton and Dr. Rohan Borschmann from the Centre for Adolescent Health argued that self-harm, violence and excessive substance use during adolescence should be viewed by family members, friends and clinicians as more than merely a \u2018passing phase\u2019. Referring to data from a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(17)31045-0\/abstract\">longitudinal UK study<\/a> of emergency department (ED) presentations by Annie Herbert and colleagues, they noted that the risk of mortality was up to 15 times higher in adolescents who presented to an ED for one of the aforementioned reasons (referred to as \u2018adversity-related\u2019 presentations) when compared to those who attended for accident-related reasons. Moreover, this risk remained elevated for up to ten years after the index presentation. In light of this, crisis presentations in adolescents should be seen as more than a passing phase.
