{"id":1685,"date":"2013-04-02T10:24:45","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T00:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/cah\/?p=1685"},"modified":"2013-04-02T10:24:45","modified_gmt":"2013-04-02T00:24:45","slug":"early-adolescent-cannabis-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/cah\/2013\/04\/02\/early-adolescent-cannabis-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Early adolescent cannabis use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/cah\/2013\/03\/13\/2000-stories-in-the-news\/2000stories_logo\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1671\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1671\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.rch.org.au\/cah\/files\/2013\/03\/2000stories_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>There has been a good deal of interest in a question about whether very early adolescent heavy cannabis use may cause ongoing problems even when someone stops cannabis use.\u00a0 The early teens are a time of rapid brain development involving those parts involved in emotional control.\u00a0 Studies in rats have suggested large doses of cannabinoids (the active ingredients in cannabis) may alter longer terms patterns of anxiety.\u00a0 Other studies in humans have raised a question about early cannabis users have reduced intelligence later in adulthood.\u00a0 We found that in our study of two thousand young Victorians a two-fold higher rate of anxiety problems in the later twenties even where an individual was no longer using cannabis.\u00a0 We could not account for it by other aspects of an individual\u2019s lifestyle or their earlier history of mental health problems.\u00a0 It is consistent with a view that heavy (at least weekly) early teen cannabis use does increase the risks for later anxiety problems.<\/p>\n<p>Degenhardt L, Coffey C, Romaniuk H, Swift W, Carlin JB, Hall WD, Patton GC.
