Ian was born on July 28th 1923 and was in his 96<sup>th<\/sup>year when he died peacefully on Feb 5th.<\/p>\n<p>He will be remembered by many of the Alumni as a pioneering anaesthetist who served on the senior staff of The Royal Children\u2019s Hospital for nearly thirty years from the early 1960s until retirement in 1988. He graduated from Melbourne Medical School in 1947 and after some early paediatric training embarked on training in anaesthesia spending time in Oxford at the Radcliffe Infirmary and with \u201cthe world\u2019s premier paediatric anaesthetist\u201d \u2013 Jackson Rees, in Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p>Both Ian and his brother Colin were notable cricketers (Colin played for Australia and was an opening batsman in the fifties). Ian played as wicket keeper for Victoria over many years and for an Australian XI against South Africa in 1953.<\/p>\n<p>We extend our sympathy to his children Sue, Jan and Andrew and to other family members. His wife Dorothy (Dottie) of 64 years, a theatre sister at the Children\u2019s Hospital (then in Carlton), predeceased him in 2014.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The RCH Alumni note with much regret the recent death of Dr Ian McDonald.
