We had been aware that he been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer a few months ago but he continued to be actively involved with Alumni matters and attended functions until July – only stopped by “Lockdowns”. His brave acceptance of his illness and his courage in recent months was extremely impressive.

Don was a paediatric and adolescent gastroenterologist with over forty years’ experience. He was a Past President of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, the first paediatrician to be elected to that position.

He was Emeritus Head of Gastroenterology at Monash Children’s Hospital and Senior Gastroenterologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

He was involved in all areas of gastroenterology with special interests in coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, endoscopy and endoscopy training. He was a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of Coeliac Australia, Chair of the national colonoscopy quality committee, and a former Chairman of the Conjoint Committee for endoscopy training.

His colleagues remember him as a warm and very talented individual to whom the well-known expression “Is Don is Good” could genuinely be applied.

Born and raised in Tasmania he underwent postgraduate training in London at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and at Kings College and St Mark’s Hospitals. At the age of 40 he took up flying and became a talented and competitive aerobatic pilot who was at one time rated amongst the top 6 in the country.

We extend condolences to his wife Robin and to Angus and Lizzie and other family members.

Donald James Stuart Cameron 05/04/47 – 16/10/21 The president and executive were greatly saddened to learn of the death of Don Cameron.
