Stories, songs and rhymes for early literacy

Every month, our friends at the State Library of Victoria bring their wonderful Baby Bounce and Storytime for preschoolers to the hospital’s Specialist Clinics waiting area so that families can enjoy stories, songs, rhymes and activities designed to stimulate imagination and language development in babies and young children.

With the support of our education partners, the RCH Education Institute creates meaningful learning opportunities for children and families in The Royal Children’s Hospital and promotes reading and literacy throughout the RCH.

Reading success starts with stories

Our popular monthly story time and singalong sessions with the State Library of Victoria resumed this week, marking the hospital’s continued commitment to the love2read campaign that kicked off in the 2012 National Year of Reading.

Talented State Library storytellers Christine and Emma delighted an audience of young outpatients and their families in the Specialist Clinics waiting area with a repertoire of familiar favourites in story and song.

The State Library of Victoria is a wonderful supporter of the Education Institute and helps us to provide rich learning opportunities for children in hospital and to promote literacy in the hospital community.

Meerkat Manners

Meerkat cupcakes were a sweet surprise at the launch of The Royal Children’s Hospital Meerkats book.

A mob of meerkats lives in The Royal Children’s Hospital in an exhibit that replicates the natural habitat of a meerkat, with open air and sunlight. Staff at Melbourne Zoo visit the hospital every day to clean, feed and care for the meerkats, as well as provide educational sessions to children.

The hospital meerkats are the inspiration for a book produced as part of a children’s publishing project with Kids’ Own Publishing, State Library of Victoria and the RCH Education Institute. The Royal Children’s Hospital Meerkats was launched at the hospital’s meerkat exhibit during Children’s Book Week.

Over a series of weeks, children at the RCH took part in workshops alongside artists and teachers, and created stories and artworks imagining the meerkats in all kinds of playful and adventurous scenarios. The resulting book is a charming collection of their work.

Holly takes a break from reading her Meerkats book to tuck into a tasty cupcake in front of the hospital’s meerkat exhibit.
